The War

"It's nothing."

"Tell me now."

"I was thinking about Marissa."

"Clone." Dark corrected.

Florence shook his head. He didn't want to believe that the girl he knew for all those years was just using him.

"Believe it."

"Maybe I should just not trust anyone." Florence said. He was referring not only to Marissa, but also someone else.

"I'm not your enemy Florence."

"How can I tell? I trusted him for almost my whole life and do you know what he did? He stabbed my back."

"He?"

"Devin." Florence replied. "He was my best friend in life, my only friend. Then one day he just turned and stabbed me in the back. Twice. Then he slit my throat. I knew this kid for nearly 15 years and he killed me without a second thought."

"I don't know your history." Dark said simply.

"Of course you don't. Simply put, the only two people I've ever trusted have both killed me."

"Well I'm making sure you're not disintegrating."

So far Florence had yet to see her try and do anything. He wondered if she he could actually trust her to do this.

"I swear on my mother's grave."

"I take it your mother was important to you then."

"Extreemly."

Promising on someone's grave meant nothing to a Reaper, but Florence knew it was something humans said that meant you could trust them.

Dark said good night and went to sleep.

Florence sighed. He looked back at his cloak. Now that he wasn't a drunk he realized that it was ripped and he knew what that meant.

In the middle of the night he was summoned. Dark was there. "Let him live. I know the assassin and I know how to kill her once and for all. But I can't do it without him."

"You know how to kill her?"

"Yes. An arrow through the heart tipped with poison. By draining a reaper, she has made herself exposed to poison." Dark told the reapers who had summoned her and Florence.

Florence was confused. "She was a Reaper herself, so how does draining my power make her weak to poison?"
