Arkos stared at the strange thing in front of him. "What exactly is it?" He asked. It had appeared at some point while he was out, and the others were investigating it rather thoroughly.

"A hole in space and time." Someone responded. "It seems to lead to a large open area."

"Is it safe to pass through?" Arkos asked.

"No idea, but we threw a rock through it and nothing bad happened, so it's worth a shot."

Arkos nodded and stepped through the portal. He walked forward a little and took in his surroundings. He seemed to be in some sort of coliseum, but it looked abandoned. He heard a voice cry out from behind him and turned around just in time to see the portal disappear. Great. Guess I won't be getting back that way.

He decided to see if there was some other way out, but when he turned back around he saw a boy with long flowing red hair standing behind him. He immediately noticed the sword the boy was carrying. "Who are you?" Arkos asked him.

"My name is Mars and I am here to kill you."

Arkos nearly laughed. The boy was a few years younger than him and didn't look experienced at all in combat. Mars didn't seem to be joking however. They raised their sword and assumed a fighting stance. Arkos decided to let them take the first attack. It would be unfair to them if he ended the fight instantly.

Mars shifted his stance and vanished. Arkos was confused. An illusion? Arkos looked around, but turned suddenly when he heard a sound behind him. Mars was charging at him very quickly, it almost looked as if the boy wasn't even touching the ground. Arkos threw up an arm to defend himself and summoned Muramasa. A second later the two blades clashed a few inches from his neck.

"Impressive." Mars said. "I didn't even see you draw your blade. However, do not think you've won." Arkos saw Mars reach for a second blade, this once at his waist. Before he could draw Arkos swung out with his free hand, Masamune materializing almost instantly. Mars jumped back just in time to dodge.

"That was close, but with both of your blades drawn you can't pull anything like that again." Mars drew his second sword as well. Arkos looked at the two blades. Unlike his own, they were both very different from each other. He wondered why anyone would weild two completely different styles of sword at the same time, it seemed like such a fighting style would be inefficient. Mars rushed at him again, swinging downwards with the wider sword. Arkos sidestepped this easily enough, but was caught off guard when Mars swung the other sword horizontally. He blocked the attack with his two swords, but was then left wide open when Mars lunged at him with the first sword.

The blade dug into his side. He swung Masamune at Mars, aiming for his neck, but Mars moved his second sword to block. When they collided, Masamune's blade snapped clean in half.

"What the hell?"

Mars dug the first sword in deeper. "There isn't a blade on this Earth that Tsubaki can't cut through." He stated simply. "You never stood a chance."

Arkos swung the now much shorter Masamune at Mars' wrist. Mars let go of the first sword and stepped back. Arkos moved away and dropped Masamune. He briefly considered pullung Mars' sword out of him, but knew it would be best if he didn't. He had to do something about the other sword, Tsubaki, before he could consider doing something that would make it much harder to fight.

Mars part II
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arkos didn't have long to think though, as Mars came at him with Tsubaki once again. As Arkos did his best to dodge the sword he noticed that Mars seemed faster with this blade than he was with two. Arkos knew he couldn't keep dodging for long, so he tried to block with Muramasa. Tsubaki seemed to pass straight through Arkos' sword and cut along his forehead. The wound wasn't deep, but he suddenly couldn't see. He stumbled backwards and fell over. Something was weird though. If Tsubaki could cut through any sword so easily, how had he been able to block it the first time. Maybe it was because he had been using two swords that time, but that didn't make much sense, unless...
Mars stood over Arkos. "Looks like I win this round." He said raising Tsubaki. He stood the for a moment, allowing Arkos to wipe the blood from his eyes. "You were a decent opponent, but clearly you never stood a chance."
Arkos summoned Masamune into his hand and focused Dark energy into it, restoring the blade. With his sword repaired he swung for Mars' leg, but the boy jumped back quickly.
"How did you...?"
Arkos got to his feet slowly, wincing from the pain. He pulled the sword from his side and let it fall to the ground. He ran at Mars, determined to end this fight as quickly as possible. Their blades collided, but Muramasa remained intact. Mars was puzzled by this, but when Arkos pulled back his sword to swing again, Mars saw a nick in the blade. They clashed again and again, but for whatever reason, Arkos' sword refused to break. Using all of his strength, Arkos swung upward, knocking Tsubaki from Mars' hands. Arkos put his sword to Mars' neck.
"Well." Mars spoke, but his voice seemed to be trembling. "That's it then. Just make it quick."
Arkos looked at Mars weirdly. "I'm not going to kill you, at least, not before I find out why you attacked me in the first place."
Mars fell to his knees.
Large words appeared in the center of the empty room. 'Arkos wins' they read.
"What is this? What's going on?"
Mars began to fade away. "Good luck." He said before disappear ing completely.
The words changed once Mars was gone. 'Tomorrow: Arkos vs. Daniel'.
Arkos began to feel light-headed. He put a hand to his side and found it incredibly damp. Damn it. I forgot... Everything suddenly went black.
Agent of Darkness
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Arkos woke up on a bed in an empty room. He looked around, expecting to see his friends beside him, but was quickly disappointed. He remembered fighting a kid and getting stabbed, but when he checked there was no wound on his side. It felt so real, but was it a dream? If that's the case then where am I now? He got up and exited the room to find a hallway.It was straight with a few other rooms, all of them along the right wall. Looking down the hall he saw blackness. It seemed that all of the lighting in the corridor came from the other end, where a bright light was shining.

Arkos moved in the direction of the light, but it quickly became blinding. The light seemed to consume the walls as it surrounded him. Suddenly the light faded and he was standing in a large circular room with no roof and no visible doors. He easily recognized that this was the same room where he had encountered Mars.

Standing in front of Arkos now was another young boy. This one was dressed all in black and had hair that matched. The boy's eyes seemed to pierce Arkos, but he wasn't sure why.

"My name is Daniel." The boy introduced himself "52nd incarnation of the Dark Lord. I was told that if I killed you, my friend would come back. So if you don't mind..."

Daniel stopped mid-sentence.Arkos felt a chill run down his spine and had the sudden urge to move. He rolled to the side moments before a shadowy blade shot forward from behind him.

"What was that?" Arkos wondered aloud. He noticed that the blade seemed to extend from Daniel's shadow.

"How rude. I do believe you were supposed to die."

"I'm rude?" Arkos asked. "What kind of person doesn't even give their opponent a chance to introduce themself?"

"There's no point." Daniel said calmly. Arkos kept an eye on his shadow this time to make sure there wouldn't be any more surprise attacks. "I already know your name. I learned it yesterday after I killed the last obstacle."

Arkos remembered that after his fight with Mars a message had appeared saying he would fight Daniel. "So is this like a tournament?"

Daniel sighed. "Enough wasting my time. I need you to die."

Arkos noticed fragments break off of Daniel's shadow. The shards moved independently and flew at Arkos like some sort of projectile. He shielded as many as possible with Masamune, but some of them still grazed him, leaving small cuts. Whatever that attack was it didn't seem like it was intended to be lethal. Looking at the ground he saw Daniel's shadow now formed a ring around him. A pillar shot out of the shadow aiming for Arkos' head. He blocked with Masamune. Another pillar shot out from behind him, which he was able to block with Muramasa. The third pillar came from his side, but he was able to duck under it. Looking up, he noticed that the pillars all connected with each other at a single point. A four pillar came from Arkos' other side, but he didn't have to dodge this one. He looked over at Daniel who had a wide grin on his face.

Arkos realized too late that it was a trap. Thin layers of shadow shot from each pillar, connecting them all and creating some sort of prison. The shape of the shadows shifted until the prison was a perfect cube. Arkos instantly felt the wall closing in. In a matter of seconds he would be crushed to death. At least, that's how it felt to him. He was able to stop the walls closing in from the top and to his sides with his swords, but he would still be flattened when the front and back walls came together.

Not wanting to die, he tried the first thing he could think of, releasing a burst of light in the confined space.

"Nice try." Daniel said, having been able to see through the semi-tranparent walls of the now rectangular prison. "However, my Darkness magic cannot be dispelled so easily."

Darkness... Arkos place a hand against the wall and grabbed Muramasa with his other hand. He closed his eyes and focused on the sword. He felt the energy flow through him and into the sword. The walls around him began to grow thinner, while the blade of the sword expanded. The box shattered, leaving Arkos with a larger and heavier version of the Muramasa. He grabbed the sword in both hands and ran at Daniel. With a single swing the fight was over.

"How did you...?"

"No idea." Arkos said. "I didn't even know it could do that."

"... so stupid..." Daniel fell to ground and instantly began to fade.

'Arkos wins'. 'Tomorrow: Arkos vs. Florence'

Arkos looked at his hands. He was beginning to fade as well.

Intermission
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arkos found himself in the room once again, though this time there were nurses tending to his wounds. He thought it was weird that they wore hoods and masks, but he figured there was probably some reason for it. Once they finished tending to him they left without saying anything. He found the room empty, lacking nearly everything except a single bed and four walls. He wondered how he was supposed to pass time in a place like this.
The room began to feel claustrophobic very quickly and he stepped out into the hall for some air. Looking down the hall he noticed a familiar face. Mars was leaning against a wall farther down the hallway.
"Hey Mars!" Arkos called. "What are you doing here?"
"Thinking, trying to come up with a way to win this. But mostly I'm leaning. Why, did you need something?"
Arkos thought about it. "Actually, you seem to have a better idea of what's going on here then I do. Could you explain it to me?"
"It's a tournament. The winner gets something that they want. Considering we seem to be in an alternate plane of existence I think whoever's in charge of this is likely capable of granting whatever wish the winner may have."
"An alternate plane? What does that even mean?"
"Space and time don't follow the rules that you're used to. When you get to the end if this hallway it'll be tomorrow and you'll be in the arena."
"So, who's in charge? Why am I here? I didn't sign up for this. Why does everyone want to kill me?"
"How should I know? What I do know is that no one told me that mercy was an option. The same is likely true for all your opponents. And it's unlikely that you're the first opponent anyone here has faced."
"So, what exactly does a kid like you want from a tournament like this anyway?" Arkos asked.
"My brother left our village one day. It's very important that he comes back unharmed. There's not a lot I can do as the chieftain's only daughter-"
"Wait. You're a girl?"
Mars turned and started walking down towards the light end of the hallway. Arkos wondered if it was related to his question, but Mars seemed angry for some reason.
